I was and still am a great admirer of Laurence Olivier as an actor the skill he had to tranform himself to who ever he was playing and that lovely speaking voice, he introduced me to Shakespare through his film of Richard 111 which i saw on TV in the early 60's. I thought his performance as Richard 111 was brilliant and i wrote to Olivier at his offices in Park Lane somewhere and told him how much i liked his film and his performance in it. He wrote back thanking me for my kindness and sent me two signed photos of himself which i was so please to get from him. Later on i went to a cinema near Oxford circus to see his othe Shakespeare film Henry V, and Hamlet as the cinema was showing a season of his films. This is an interesting article about Olivier and the fact in later life he suffered from stage fright, i read his autobiography confessions of an actor and he did say about this problem which he had for over 5 years i think it started when he played Othello. As this article says it is hard to imagine an actor of Olivier's talent and experience to suffer this type of illness, in his book he had to take Valium i think to control the stage fright a type of panic attacks i would liken it too. I did not know he had stage fright througout his career as this article has stated it never showed he always seemed in control when i saw him in films etc. Olivier took on so many roles from Shakespeare to Osborne on the stage and his talent also as a director and producer in his Shakespeare films must have been very demanding also playing the leading roles. When he died in 1989 i felt it was the end of an era his like would not be seen again regarding the theatrical profession.
